Lexus Invites the Green-Oriented to Take a ‘Dark Ride’

Norman Reedus plays Tony the driver in an interactive film to promote the Lexus CT 200h, to come out in early 2011.

To help a new model stand out in an increasingly crowded category of hybrid automobiles, Lexus is turning to a new agency that specializes in strategic ideas — in this instance, to portray a “green” car as one honkin’ fast, hot ride.

The first work from the agency, a New York shop named Skinny that is owned by MDC Partners, invites drivers on a “dark ride” to experience the “darker side of green.”

A video clip on a Web site will offer the first look at the Lexus CT 200h, which Lexus, part of Toyota Motor, is calling a premium compact hybrid car. The new model is scheduled to be introduced in early 2011.

The film, about 12 and a half minutes long, will be interactive, Skinny executives say, allowing visitors to the Web site to play navigator during a wild ride in a CT 200h with a manic driver named Tony, portrayed by the actor Norman Reedus.

The trailer offers a sneak peek at the premise of the short film, which is set up by a voice-over narrator: “The opposition tried to steal our hybrid technology,” she says, and “you must make all the decisions and get the car to Los Angeles in one piece.”
